Saint Patrick – birth name Maewyn – is Ireland’s patron saint. But his celebrations were more staid in Ireland. It wasn’t until Irish immigrants started flooding into the US that the parades and parties we now associate with Saint Patrick’s Day were born.
The March 17th holiday is now celebrated in many parts of the world. In Illinois, 40 pounds of Kelly green dye tint the Chicago River. In Monserrat, West Indies, people combine Saint Patrick’s Day with the commemoration of an attempted slave revolt, and party for an entire week. Flamenco dancers drink Guiness at Cabo Roig, the site of Spain’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade. From Quebec to Tokyo, Moscow to Auckland, everybody wants to be at least a little bit Irish on March 17th.
At Old World Stoneworks, we get in the spirit with special mantel décor. Here are a few ideas for a special Saint Pat’s themed mantel display.
Classic Saint Patrick’s Day Style
What’s cuter than a leprechaun? A whole army of kitschy leprechaun figurines marching across your mantel. If you have gold to protect, these are your guys. You can get paper cutouts or plastic figures at your local party store.
Wordy
Irish people trace their gift of gab back to the Blarney Stone. So consider adorning your mantel with words and phrases that conjure the Irish: The traditional greeting, “Top of the morning to you,” “Kiss me, I’m Irish,” or words like “lucky” or “pot of gold.” You can make banners or arrange block letters to spell out words. If you’re really crafty, stitch needlepoint sayings that you’ll use year after year.
Rainbow
Not everybody loves green as much as the Irish. Maybe you’re more colorful than that. Consider a rainbow theme for your mantel. After all, that’s the only thing standing between you and a big pot of gold. Use colorful pompoms, a rainbow garland, or bold swathes of brightly-colored cardboard as a backdrop for a vase of multi-colored flowers and a few tasteful shamrock cutouts.
Celtic Art
If you have a more traditional or anthropological bent, decorate your mantel with Celtic art. Celtic crosses, knots, trees and animals all make a symbolic statement and will complement more formal living rooms. In fact, our Majorca mantel is reminiscent of Celtic art. Think how nice it would look topped by a few Celtic crosses and shamrocks for your Saint Patrick’s Day home.
