Father’s Day Mantel Decorations

We at Old World Stoneworks want to wish all you dads out there a Happy Father’s Day. We know how important you are to your children, whether they’re babies, toddlers, teens or all grown up.

Since we’re the inquisitive sort, we decided to research how Father’s Day became celebrated in the US and beyond. Mother’s Day originally started right after the Civil War. But a day appreciating fathers lagged behind. Several people tried to drum up interest, including Grace Golden Clayton of Fairmont, West Virginia. That town still has a plaque commemorating it as the home of the first Father’s Day church service in 1907. But Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, is credited with being the first to really make Father’s Day catch on. Dodd’s mother died in childbirth, leaving her father alone to raise six young children. Dodd felt that he – and other hardworking fathers – deserved a day just for them.

Dodd inspired local pastors to deliver sermons honoring fathers on June 19, 1910. Soon the tradition spread to Miami, Chicago and Portland. President Calvin Coolidge endorsed the idea in 1924.

But not until 1972, under President Richard Nixon, did Father’s Day officially gain recognition as a holiday.

Now, are you in the mood to decorate your mantel for Father’s Day? Here are a few ideas to create the perfect mantel honoring dad on his special day.

On Father’s Day, Dad is the star of the show. Cover the mantel with framed photos and snapshots of Dad. Being the center of attention is sure to make him blush. But he will love it. Show him you’ve been paying attention all these years by adding mementos of his favorite memories or family activities.

If you’re feeling extra crafty, making some of the decorations for the Father’s Day mantel always adds an extra touch of “special”. Grab your camera and make a cute photo collage of the children. We love the simple and sweet way Positively Splendid created a special father’s day frame. You could also have the kids craft a banner for the mantel like the easy and fun tie banner from SheKnows.com.
