The most common firebox types

When it comes to choosing a firebox you have a choice of the three most common options.  The original, centuries old design is a masonry firebox where a mason actually builds the firebox and chimney from scratch. This is the most expensive and labor intensive type.

Your next option is a modular kit firebox (as pictured aboved using a Rumford brand firebox) and would be constructed on-sight by a mason using the materials supplied by the manufacturer.  This type is typically lower in price than a masonry firebox.
