Expert Tip: How to Get Your Fireplace Cold Weather Ready

Few things sound better than spending a cold afternoon in front of a roaring fireplace with family and friends. You can enjoy this little pleasure every chilly evening by ensuring that your fireplace is cold weather ready. Whether you have a wood fireplace, a gas fireplace or an electric fireplace, here are some tips to prepare your fireplace for those blustery winters:

    • For a wood fireplace, be sure to sweep out your chimney at least once a year. Definitely have your chimney cleaned before starting your wood-burning fireplace, stove or insert. Have any gasket material inspected and replaced as required, as well. If the fireplace has a blower, be sure to clean that too. These blowers usually do not have a filtering system to prevent buildup of dust and hair on the blower.
    • For a gas fireplace, you most likely have a pilot light that is on all the time. Make sure this pilot is serviced regularly. A can of compressed air can be used to clean out the pilot orifice (the opening where the gas comes out). If your system is five or more years old, you may need to call a specialist. Also, have the airways of both the pilot and main burners cleaned to ensure they are operating correctly. Just like for the wood fireplace, if your gas-burning fireplace has a blower, clean that as well.
    • Electric fireplaces have far less maintenance concerns than its wood and gas counterparts. To keep a consistent fire however, replace your light bulbs before the cold-weather season gets underway.
    • In general, check the chimney structure for cracks, loose bricks, missing mortars and cracked or deteriorated chimney liners.

Be sure to triple-check your fireplace for cleanliness. If you need help designing a fireplace mantel perfect for cold temperatures, call us to schedule an appointment today or to get advice from our experts!
