Ideas for Refacing Your Fireplace

The fireplace is the natural focal point of any room, and is the logical place to gather with family or to entertain friends. But what if your fireplace doesn’t match your personal style? Maybe you moved into a house with a dated fireplace, or have outgrown a fireplace you used to love. Either way, it’s time for a makeover. At Old World Stoneworks, we believe your fireplace should bring you nothing but joy. Here are some of our ideas for refacing your fireplace and falling in love with it all over again.

Stone

At Old World Stoneworks, updating your old worn out fireplace to one of our stylish stone mantels is our specialty. Our stone fireplace surrounds have a beautiful, warm feel. Stone provides soothing, natural colors, while allowing plenty of room for different expressions of your personal taste. Our selection of stone surrounds have a classic feel, and timeless designs. Stone also retains heat, making the fireplace especially inviting on a cool winter’s evening.

The image below came from a customer in New York who used the Laurent Mantel to update their tired brick fireplace.  To see the full transformation check out our Before & After section!  You could also consider incorporating natural stone to contrast the sleek design of our smooth stone mantels like the design using our Capri cast stone mantel on the right.

Tiles

Tiles are another versatile material for refacing your fireplace. They come in more varieties and colors than stone and can be a great way to add a pop of color. Options run the spectrum from subtle to making a major statement. For a more subtle approach, try large neutral color tiles for an understated sleek look like the Nottingham design on the left.  Going for more of a chic, modern look?  Try incorporating smaller backsplash tiles to accent your stone fireplace and give it a glam look like the Oxford cast stone mantel on the right.

Bricks

Old-fashioned brick fireplaces aren’t as popular as they used to be but that doesn’t mean that you can work them into your updated fireplace design.  Classic red bricks complement the natural color of Old World Stoneworks’ fireplace mantels perfectly. You could experiment with textures, too. Try rounded, rough-cut or a different pattern of bricks or stick with the traditional running bond pattern like this OWS customer did with their custom outdoor Cambridge fireplace.

Marble

Since each piece of marble is different, accenting your fireplace surround with marble lends a unique look to your home. Marble is available in slabs or tiles and has the added benefit of being fire-resistant.  While marble comes in many colors, we think the traditional white veined marble this OWS customer used to accent their Rosamond mantel, was the perfect addition to make their fireplace surround truly unique.

When you’re considering breathing new life into an outdated fireplace, here are some other additions and accents to consider.

Make a Statement by Going Tall

Extending your fireplace facing all the way to the ceiling really makes it a room’s focal point. This grand look will draw family and guests like a magnet. Check out our cast stone overmantels which can be customized to fit varying ceiling heights. Overmantels are the perfect accent choice for large rooms.

Add Built-ins

Refacing a fireplace is the perfect time to address additional household needs. You can incorporate bookshelves, other shelving or storage drawers. Hearthside seating is sure to be a hit, and provides a few more places for guests to sit during large gatherings.

Merge your focal point with your TV

Designers and homeowners alike struggle with the TV/fireplace conundrum. If you’re refacing, why not address this issue by adding a TV into your new fireplace design? No more splitting of focal points. Tie it together by extending your fireplace with stone or matching paint.
